Vivian’s family are penniless nomads, moving from one cheap flat to another in Beverly Hills so she and her brothers can attend the city’s schools. Uncle Mickey sends them money to survive. When Mickey’s daughter Rita runs away from an asylum, Vivian’s dad offers shelter to her if Mickey will pay for a plush flat. Vivian must babysit her adult cousin, making sure she gets to nursing school and avoids pills and booze. But Vivian has her own problems: she’s curious about sex, likes an older neighbor kid, has inherited her mother’s ample breasts, and wants a family that doesn’t embarrass her. Can she help Rita, keep Uncle Mickey happy, and feel OK about her body and her family?

Film Review

The cast and vignettes in "Slums of Beverly Hills" are better than the totality. Natasha Lyonne is particularly good, switching from dead pan comedy to poignant and she is warm chemistry with Alan Arkin as her dad.The ending trailed off. As a person behind me pointed out, if they’re staying in Beverly Hills for the school district, how come they’re never in school? If you’re collecting coming of age movies (or Kevin Corrigan movies) it’s worth seeing, like "Manny and Lo," another, better indie movie about virtually parentless teens and how they cope.(originally written 9/12/1998)

I’m not saying this is a bad movie…..sometimes it’s really funny…sometimes, it’s touching, and sometimes poignant to the point when you know exactly (more ladies would understand) what ‘Vivian’ is going through. These are the strong points…conveying the mood. But the problem is that, at some point, the movie has to go somewhere. Yes, even if there’s no organized plot, even if it’s only through the eyes of a 15-year-old. I thought I saw it going somewhere, I think it was, but a couple scenes later I thought I was right back at the beginning again. Here’s how it went in my opinion: something happens to Vivian, it progresses, it ends; start over, something happens, progresses, ends… you get the idea.I liked the main character, I could even relate to her as a friend would; but it felt more like this could’ve been a short story or even a sitcom, than a feature-length flick. The characters acted adequately…someone mentioned that the fact that this movie took place in the ’70’s ma…

I pulled this one off the video shelf and wasn’t expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised by how good a movie it was. Extremely well cast, well acted, well directed, well written film. This film is well worth seeing for anyone who likes good movies. Alan Arkin is hilarious and has recaptured his perfect timing from his earlier movies. The girl that plays the lead does an excellent job. everyone is good in this. I definitely recommend.
